So today we had different introductions to the departments. So we talked with a guy named Chaitan and talked us through to the layout department. He talked us through what the layout department does and showed us examples of his work on current shows which I can’t talk about. He also showed us some old shows like the book of Boba Fett and how they constructed the scene through the layout and how you could see the whole environment so you can how it helps the animation team and assists department get the scene ready! While in between meetings we were practising roto on a practice shot from a current job which I cannot discuss but it’s very exciting work. We talked with Marie from the art department and talked her through the beginning stages of concept art that she has worked on and show that they work on the beginning stages of a show that they produce to be picked up by a productions company or for a show that is already out and want to do. They basically work on pitches to production company for original work that goes on with jellyfish which I think is so cool. Then, we had a meeting with Mark to talk about the tender farm and how it works. He showed us that that when work is out in the render farm that the comp department have the highest priority as they have they most work to render as well as they have the most important work like final shots that get sent to the client. This is for the whole company and talked about how the computers and always on to help the render farm. He also stressed the importance of logging out of your computer at the end of the day otherwise it uses resources and slows down the tender farm and could put your computer on out of work hours which will need IT to restart to put your computer back on to the correct work hours. He also said about how there is also a lot of pages on the Jellyfish Wiki for the tender farm and if we needed anything we can check it there or just send him a message. It was time for the animation department and we had Mariella talk to us about how the animation department create it shots through layering and how they use the camera to deve the depths of field so it looks like a complicated inviting to but it actually fact it’s just 3 objects in the differents layers on the screen. For example one in the foreground, one in the background and one as the main asset and using it for the character to use. This was very interesting to see on what show she was doing which I cannot talk about but it looked very complicated with what she was doing. Then, it was time for the last meeting of the day with the production department with Ollie. She talked with us about what they production department does. They talk with the client about the shots and sorts out the meetings and dailes with the client and artists and talks with everyone about how much time is given on a shot and given a timeline for the project they are on. They also talked how if anyone joins the projects she adds them to all the emails lists and teams meetings and chat for that project. It was very interesting to learn about and after this we just went back to our roto for the rest of the afternoon til we finished.
